How can I encourage someone I love to give up smoking marijuana?

Question by Shay7: How can I encourage someone I love to give up smoking marijuana?
It is seriously affecting their physical health but as the addiction is so strong he will not listen to anyone’s advice and seems not to be able to go more than a couple of hours without a smoke. It hurts very much to watch and so I am desperately looking for any advice on something that may encourage him to try and stop, or help him to stop or even just cut down.

Hmm never new weed had that much of an effect on health. I guess too much of anything is a bad thing.

    I dont think thats marijuana.

  • Q Baby says:

don’t enable and give him an alternative.
    either you or the weed.
    and mean it.

people sometimes need to face a hard reality for themselves.
but if you are always there for him, then why should he change if he’s got nothing to lose?

intervention with you and anyone else who cares about him….or if there’s no one else…then just you.

he’s got to have something (you) to lose to be able to see, that yes, it’s a real problem.

  • UNIVERSAL says:

Insist and persist him not to smoke.
Give him a final warning that you will leave him forever.
Leave him if he continues smoking.

You can tell them about the drawbacks of using marijuana.

Marijuana has been used in the US for quite some time. In the past the only real drawbacks were:
    - risk of addiction (however, less than alcohol or heroin)
    - lung cancer (also not much worse than tobacco)
    - risk or hyper aggressive testicle cancer
    - a reduction of at least 30 points in your IQ
    - an increased risk in developing a major mental illness
    - an increase in risk behavior (similar to alcohol)
    - an increased risk in having a child with an attention deficit disorder – even after the parent stopped smoking marijuana.
    - nearly 100% of people convicted of a felony and receiving a term of five or more years had THC in their system when arrested (By far the highest of any other drug)
    - an increase in sick days at work
    - an increase in workplace injuries

Many of these consequences simply result in higher medical costs for everyone, and higher education costs to handle all the attention deficit kids.

I live in one of the states that allows “medical marijuana”, we noticed an immediate increase in drivers driving under the influence of marijuana. While alcohol only impairs a person’s judgement for 6-12 hours. Marijuana can impair for 24,48 or even 72 hours. The marijuana really penetrates the fatty tissue of the brain – unlike alcohol. I used the term “medical marijuana” in quotes as no real doctor would prescribe a drug that was designed to be inhaled like tobacco cigarettes. In my state the vast majority of the medical marijuana recommendations were from four doctors. All four doctors had lost their privileges at every hospital and all four were banned from prescribing any prescription drug after losing their DEA license. There is actually an approved drug called marinol that allows the user to get the THC in a measured dose without all the cancer causing chemicals. Surprisingly, none of the medical marijuana patients asked to try this.

The marijuana used for recreation is far different than the marijuana of old. This is heavily genetically modified to increase the THC count. Many amateur growers use fertilizers that are banned for use on food. Other dangerous chemicals are added to the soil to increase yield and banned pesticides are used to attack parasites that attack marijuana plants.

This is my opinion, based on my observations as a police officer.
